<p> Mark your calendar for this Friday, May 18th.  At 3:00 p.m. sharp the South Carolina Aquarium Sea Turtle Rescue Program will be releasing two loggerhead sea turtles back into the wild.  Brought into the hospital on the brink of death, these two resilient turtles have made a full recovery.  This release is being held in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission (CCPRC).  The event is open to the public; attendees should plan to carpool, arrive early, and expect to pay for parking at the County Park. </p>

<p>More on the sea turtles being released:&#13;<br />
<br />Jammer:  Jammer is a 93-pound juvenile loggerhead sea turtle.  S/he was rescued on the Isle of Palms near the Windjammer beach bar in April of last year.  When brought into the hospital by SCDNR, Jammer was in extremely debilitated suffering from emaciation, dehydration, and had a heart rate of only 7 beats per minute.  Upon admittance, there was concern that Jammer had neurological damage because s/he was swimming in circles in the same direction, but after several weeks of intensive care, Jammer began swimming normally.  Treatment included antibiotics, fluids, vitamin injections, barnacle removal and treatment for shell damage due to secondary infection.  After more than a year of treatment, Jammer is finally ready for the journey back into the Atlantic Ocean.</p>

<p>Hamlin Creek: Hamlin Creek is a 75-pound juvenile loggerhead sea turtle found in Hamlin Creek, also located on the Isle of Palms.  S/he was rescued in June of last year suffering from severe dermatitis, dehydration, and had poor blood work.  Treatment for Hamlin Creek included fluids, vitamin injections, and antibiotics.  Since being admitted to the Sea Turtle Hospital, Hamlin Creek has gained weight and his/her skin has fully healed.  Feisty and healthy, Hamlin Creek is ready to venture back into the open ocean.</p>

<p>About the South Carolina Aquarium Sea Turtle Rescue Program:  &#13;<br />
<br />In partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), the South Carolina Aquarium Sea Turtle Rescue Program works to rescue, rehabilitate and release sea turtles that strand along the South Carolina coast.  Located in the Aquarium, the Sea Turtle Hospital admits 20 to 30 sea turtles each year. Many of these animals are in critical condition and some are too sick to save. </p>

<p>According to SCDNR, over the last 10 years the average number of sea turtle standings on South Carolina beaches each year is 130. Of these, roughly 10% are alive and successfully transported to the Sea Turtle Hospital.  To date, the South Carolina Aquarium has successfully rehabilitated and released 90 sea turtles and is currently treating 6 patients.  The average cost for each patient’s treatment is $  36 a day with the average length of stay reaching nine months.</p>

<p> The Snohomish County Tourism Bureau has launched an intensive research program designed to discover, define and design the area’s competitive differentiator – i.e. what makes Snohomish County special so it can stand out among tourism destinations. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to bring more awareness to the area and attract more visitors to Snohomish County. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>To bring outside objectivity to the project, the Tourism Bureau has partnered with Nashville-based North Star Destination Strategies. North Star has helped develop destination brands for more than 150 communities nationwide. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“We are delighted to be working with North Star on this project.  The review committee representing tourism partners from around Snohomish County are confident in North Star’s ability to help drive the direction for tourism marketing of Snohomish County,” said Amy Spain, Executive Director of the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not around. In other words, your reputation.” explains Don McEachern, CEO of North Star. “Many times people choose to visit to a place based wholly on the word-of-mouth about it. Branding is what you do to change or refine that message. We are delighted to be working with the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau in this capacity.”</p>

<p>The integrated process includes research, strategy and creative development. The first stage is research and comprises about 80% of the work.  “Here we determine the state of your existing brand,” says McEachern.  More than 15 pieces of qualitative and quantitative research will paint a thorough picture of how Snohomish County is thought of today.  This research includes an assessment of the environment; inquiry origin, visitor origin, demographics and psychographics of residents and visitors; perceptions of visitors, residents and stakeholders; and a review of current communications and the competition. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Using that research, North Star will develop a brand strategy that is relevant to the area’s current situation but also differentiates it to consumers. “The research will not only tell our existing story, it will yield insights that point us in the direction of our desired future story,” says Amy Spain.  </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The final stage of the project will involve the development of a brand identity guide for Snohomish County. “Suggestions for the brand’s look and language, as well as a new logo and tagline are a part of this guide. But a brand is so much more than that,” stresses McEachern. “Your community needs to wear this new brand like a second skin. We will provide you the creative tools and ideas to make that happen.” This includes ideas for communications, signage, special events, community outreach, online initiatives, merchandising and more. </p>

     According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Minnesota is the top turkey-producing state in America, with a planned production total of 46.5 million in 2011. Six states—Minnesota, North Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia, and Indiana—account for nearly two-thirds of the 248 million turkeys that will be raised in the U.S. this year.&#13;</p>
<p>     The National Turkey Federation estimated that 46 million turkeys—one fifth of the annual total of 235 million consumed in the United States in 2007—were eaten at Thanksgiving.&#13;</p>
<p>     In a survey conducted by the National Turkey Federation, nearly 88 percent of Americans said they eat turkey at Thanksgiving. The average weight of turkeys purchased for Thanksgiving is 15 pounds, which means some 690 million pounds of turkey were consumed in the U.S. during Thanksgiving in 2007.&#13;</p>
<p>     According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest pumpkin pie ever baked weighed 2,020 pounds and measured just over 12 feet long. It was baked on October 8, 2005 by the New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers in Ohio, and included 900 pounds of pumpkin, 62 gallons of evaporated milk, 155 dozen eggs, 300 pounds of sugar, 3.5 pounds of salt, 7 pounds of cinnamon, 2 pounds of pumpkin spice and 250 pounds of crust.

A tech veteran, Bargen also authored Inside DirectX, a book about the eponymous gaming platform, during his time at Microsoft.</p>
