Cape Town as a Travel and Language Destination

Cape Town (PRWEB) August 31, 2011

Cape Town Tourism’s new strategy, which focuses on urban tourism, is a great step forward, says Director of International House Cape Town (IH Cape Town), Jonathan Thompson.

“With nearly 200 tourism-related businesses closing in the past two years, we are greatly relieved that Cape Town Tourism is tackling the issue,” Mr Thompson said.

“I believe passionately in Cape Town as a destination and I’m thrilled with this renewed strategy by Cape Town tourism to promote Cape Town to the world” he added.

IH Cape Town offers international students the ability to combine their English language study with other, more touristic programmes, such as volunteering, surfing and safari’s. The school therefore depends to a degree on the popularity of Cape Town as a destination.

Gavin Eyre, Managing Director of IH Cape Town, stated that “despite the global financial crises and economic downturn, Cape Town as a travel and language destination is increasingly popular”.

“Voted recently as the best destination of 2011 in the Trip Advisor’s – Traveller’s Choice Awards as well as being named Africa’s leading destination by the World Travel Awards in July 2010, the city has a lot going for it. But we cannot rest on our laurels, as we compete with other long haul language travel destinations like the UK, Canada and Australia which are well established.

Both are hugely optimistic about the future and say they will continue to promote and offer the services of the Cape Town school to language and gap year students as well as local and international travellers. Unlike other language travel destinations, there is currently limited support from government and local tourism bodies and therefore the new strategy is a positive step.

According to the statement released by Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold on 12 August 2011, the entire campaign and its execution detail will be launched locally in October and globally in November this year. The new strategy was chosen after research revealed that 80 percent of international tourists were now in search of urban tourism.
